Blog to review
The blog we have chosen to review this week is by John Gaynard, his blog is solely based on exploring the idea of creativity and innovation. He is particularly interested in psychometrics, international innovation (industrial and social), knowledge management, creativity, coaching and leadership development.

Click on the link below to visit his website

Authorship
The author of this blog as mentioned before is John Gaynard, he is a French professor currently teaching a master's program for Technological Innovation and Project Management. In addition, he is also known as an Associate Lecturer, Coach and an Innovative Consultant. The purpose of his blog is based upon his interests as mentioned above. He aims to learn more about the phenomenon of creativity, what is it, how does it appears, and what affects the persons ability co create something new, something innovative.

The reason we chose to review John Gaynards blog is due to his vast range of subjects he covers and the articulation of his articles, we thought his background, experience and profession gave him authorisation to write on this complex topic.

Viewership
Gaynards’ blog was originally created for his students that was studying his course “Creativity, innovation and change”. But now has evolved, and now is more of a space for him to share his ideas and opinions. In addition, it provides us with a number of articles about creativity with his views on them. His opinions and views are enriched with information cited from books and articles on creativity. There are a number of stand points he argues from depending on the subject matter, for example; he would sometimes look at innovation and creativity from a managerial perspective, or information managements perspective, his views are rarely biased, This is why his articles are so articulate. The target audience would most likely be professionals, students or anyone interested in his field of discussion.

Merits
Gaynards’ website started from a simple purpose which was to inform and educate his students, and has now become a library of information about creativity and innovation. It enriches us with large range of subjects that cover his views on creativity and innovation, from looking at the cognition behind creativity to sustainable developments for businesses. It is not simply his opinions and views, but also collaboration with other researcher’s ideas and theories which he cites to back up his ideas. In addition to this, he also provides references such as websites in which his viewers can visit for further information. This is important for those who are researchers or professionals in the field. The most important factor that contributes to the success of this blog is most likely the frequent updates by John Gaynard, it takes into consideration the most up to date research being done by other researches and also current business and social issues.

Discussion
Creativity and Innovation can be described in differant ways, generally creativity can define as the ability to create, or using imagination to generate ideas, images or solutions. Innovation on the other hand is decribed as a process of turning the creative ideas into something useful, or turning it into a new product, process, or new way of thinking.

In one of John Gaynards posts on "do all problems need to find a solution". It mainly discusses the remarks from the world champion of “systems thinking” Russel Ackoff. He clearly states his points and opinions on his ideals and says it is mainly based on the patterns of thoughts. There is a quote by Ackoff from Einstein “Without changing our pattern of thought, we will not be able to solve the problems we created with our current patterns of though”. Even though its been said centuries ago, it is still valid in our modern day and also a great reminder of how our mind works. People are use to thinking in a pattern of thought, which is why when a problem comes up, the only thought that comes to mind is based on pattern. This is why when a problem arises, it is almost never a solution to the problem. Ackoff mentioned that we can do one of three things when a problem arises “solve it, resolve it, or resolve it”.

John Gaynards is personally enhancing, in sense that it allows us to realise our perception of problems and allows us to make the suitable adjustments on it and identify the patterns of thought, the article calls this “assumption surfacing”. This is one of the many inspiring articles by Gaynard, we do not hesitate in recommending this to people who are interested in this topic area.

Closing Statement
i.SEE really do appreciate all the comments posted, and for spending the time and effort to provide us with valuable information which we can work towards to do better.

A lot of the comments identified an issue with not picking a specific blog by John Gaynard, which is why we have decided to make an addition to our post under the “discussion” section. We made our own analysis on one of johns posts and decided it was a valuable experience in a way that, it gave us an insight on what John Gaynards style of writing was, and where we stood in terms of his postion on creativity and innovation. Again, we want to thank everyone for their sincere comments and critiques.

**Comments and questions are most welcome, with kind regards

  1. Thank you for sharing this blog.

I think it is an archive that promoting creativity and innovation because it has lots of articles, blogs, or essays which are sharing author’s views of creativity and innovation. However, there is a problem arise because a lot of articles, blogs, or essays.

As readers of your team’s blog, your team provides a useful link for us to enhance our knowledge in creativity and innovation. However, this blog has more than 300 articles or essays. I think that your team can try to take 1 (or more) most useful article, you think it is most helpful for us to enrich our knowledge in creativity and innovation, for us to read. It is because we cannot read all the articles in a short period of time.

Moreover, I think that it is too general to provide a blog’s link, and said it is promoting creativity and innovation. In John’s blog, he has covered different subject in creativity such as creative leadership, creative management, creative problem solving. I think that your team can pick one subject which is mostly helpful for us to develop our future career.

    Thanks for reading it.

  2. Dear Bloggers,

I loved your Blog title. It is very innovative, especially, the expansion of the term 'i.see'. It not only stands for the abbreviation of 'I.See' but it also exhibits the whole process of learning through the blogs i.e. Inspire --> Stimulate --> Explore --> Educate. Coming up with abbreviations might be easy but coming up with something that is in sync and retains the flow of the title is not an easy task. Kudos to you for that!

The link that you have provided is certainly very comprehensive and has a bucketful of information brimming with knowledge on varied topic. In fact, I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to make use of a specific topic for our own blog. However, as 2411rkgryo pointed out, it would have been more than helpful if you guys could have focussed on a specific blog or a particular issue that one of his blogs raised. This would have narrowed down the topic and made it a better read for the readers of your blog.

For example, his blog on 'The Difficult Move From Doing Things Better to Doing Things Differently – The Challenge of China and Microsoft': http://johngaynardcreativity.blogspot.com/2009/09/difficult-move-from-doing-things-better.html brings up an intereting question: Which is a more innovative thing:
    a) Doing things better
    or
    b) Doing things differently

Here crops up different issues that could be further looked upon and thought! Should companies try more towards being 'different' from the others or should they try to build on to their own strength and offer better things to the customers?

  3. Thanks for sharing.

First of all, the blog u chose is really appropriate as the author is excelling in various areas like technology, innovation, project management etc. The author explains what he wants to create and innovate in different ways. If people cannot get the main ideas because of the limited knowledge of technology, John will use the social knowledge and his own experience to support. Also, Collecting wide range of recourse from different aspect can embellish the room of Creativity and Innovation.

Secondly, One of the article John made is “Service Innovation Needs Good Review Criteria”. John think of creative ideas in promoting innovation which also provide some statement of other professors in order to support his ideas. This is also a success element why he promote creativity successfully.

Thirdly, the blog covered over 20 subjects. It is better if u share some specific articles with us so let us know more about what other ways he promote creativity and innovation.

  5. Thank you for your sharing.

First of all, I really appreciate your group name with an excellent interpretation. I have never thought the simple two words can have such a great implication. It is also very nice to see all your faces in the first post of this blog. But it will be more direct if you use "I" instead of "s/he" when introducing yourselves since this is a blog between you and the readers.

Actually, it is good to recommend a blog concerning creativity and innovation on various subjects that both you and the readers can enrich the creativity and innovation in different aspects. However, I also agree what the above commentators have said that it would be better if you can suggest a few posts for visitors to read. It is because when I enter the blog, I feel a little bit confused which post to read owing to the numerous posts.

Also, it would be appreciated if you can briefly introduce what the post is about if you have suggested the reader to see. It can help the readers to better understand both the blog and the post.

And at the bottom of the post, there are some useful links suggested to visit. It is good to recommend your readers to visit the link learning more about creativity and innovation.
But simple descriptions can be added besides them to motivate your readers to read.

Anyway, you all have done a great job on your first post and I hope you will enjoy inspiring, stimulating, exploring and educating yourselves during writing this blog.

  6. You guys have provided an abundant website to us. You really find a good blog.
But what “I see” now is I would directly look into the blog that you provided rather than looking at your blog.

I suggest you can pick up one interesting topic from the blog and talking about it. I think it would be more important for you to explore the means of creativity rather than revise other’s view of points.

I think having your position about Creativity and Innovation would also help the blog to become more attractive.

Finally, I really like the design of your blog. Some of the other’s blog feels like boring and boring…… Keep going, hope to see your next passage.

  7. Thank you for your sharing.I love your group name, “i.SEE” and the meaning behind are “Inspire, Stimulate, Explore and educate”. It is really interesting that I can know what your purpose and the motivation are from your group name; also it shows your creativity. In your introduction, it shows all your updated photos and I can know more about you from it, it is a good beginning on setting a blog.

The author writes a lot of articles about creativity and innovation. Some of it includes the video and it is more attractive and interesting because if it just has words, it looks boring and video let the viewers more impress on what the author said. However, it shows so many articles and maybe you can just choosing and focus on some articles, it can help the readers to have a clear concept or idea on it and it looks too general now and not specific. Besides, your introduction are very long but the part of Merits and Suggested improvements are too short, I think you can have some improvement on it, you should write more on them because it is not balance now, it seems a little bit strange.

  9. Your choice of blog is wonderful! It perfectly fits viewers like clasmates in MGT2411: the blog is designed for university students to view( Gaynard's students), and the topics it covers (e.g. business) are closely related to what we are learning now. Thanks for your introduction that makes us part of the viewership.

There is something makes me doubtful in your review on Gaynard's blog: is it solely based on exploring creativity and innovation? We have to be careful when using words like "solely".

Take the most recent post about Lehman Brothers and accounting as example, he deduced principles of being creative from the case of Lehman Brothers( avoid destructive destructive innovations), and linked creativity and innovation to other academic fields e.g. accounting and business ethics in this post. It explores other subjects and deduces knowledge about creativity and innovation. Saying that it explores creativity and innovation would have omitted its feature of integrated learning: learning from several inter-related subjects and consolidate the understanding on all these subjects.

We can also find tags( subjects) like leadership, game theory, knowledge management and etc. on the right hand side of the blog. Therefore, as one of its contribution in promoting creativity and innovation is:

It tells its viewers that creativity and innovation are applicable to many subjects, like management( e.g. leadership), information systems( e.g. knowledge management) and even science like economics and mathematics ( e.g. Game theory), and supports it with daily examples and concrete arguements.

You may like to tell us more about how creativity and innovation is applicable in other subjects in the extension of this post.

  10. Hi iseeonci, I have just read your blog, and I found the blog’s content very inspiring. You have chosen a great brand, as Apple is a brand that has great impact to one’s cultural impact.

You have mentioned creativity in your blog. I think that it certainly true, as Apple is known for its creative design. Believe it or not, the font style is actually developed by Apple Company, not the Microsoft Company. The invention of I-phone has actually has great impact on people’s cultural identity by promoting the concept of convenience to the others. Nowadays, you can see that everybody is using these kind of devices to communicate with each other.

Keep up with your good work!

  12. Halo iseeonci! This is my first time to see your article and I’m firstly attracted by those cool Apple pictures. Apple is a well-known organization to promote its creativity and innovation. You can see that Apple products like i-phones, mac books and i-pod nano are everywhere in Hong Kong.

As I’m HRM student, I would like to investigate the company in the view of organizational culture. Steve Jobs, Apple CEO, wearing casual jean stands in front of the world to introduce the new innovative Apple products. Like their stylish boss, the employees also wear T-shirts and jeans to come back to office instead of those decent suits. However, their seriousness and efficiency are even higher than ordinary companies’ workers. Some Apple workers say that “90 Hours a Week and Loving It!” They actually work 24 hours a day with their telecommunication devices. If they can think some creative and practical ideas, they share their new ideas back to the company immediately by those hi-tech devices. These ideas may be then spread globally to the Apple branches in different countries. I think that means they are enthusiastic and enjoyable to work. This is a very positive organizational culture influencing every employee in every country to spur creativity and innovation within the office and the company. Therefore, I hope you guys can talk more on this issue.

  13. Clear presentation-
Your language was good and so your article was comfortable to read. Also, I appreciated your blog design because you had given a structured passage with tittles that helped readers to follow closely. Also, you used enlarged words to highlight the key discussion. It was a good practice for effective communication.

    More expectation for content-
I found that you gave general description about Gaynards’ Website and his inspiring quotation, but what was your own opinion to his discussion? I would like to learn more about your critique because you were writing your blog. Frankly speaking, I did not take your course and so I did not fully understand the aim and expectation of this blog. Probably, you had fulfilled the course requirement and I was expecting something out-tracked. Nevertheless, from readers’ point of view, I would be more interested in your opinion rather than a summary of other’s work.

    Coherence work-
Everything you discussed was about the website that you chose that every paragraph were consistent. I would also like to know what other websites you had considered but you forwent at the end. You had put those them down with short description. That was fine. However, you could have given strong reasons why you did not choose them. Otherwise, it would be quite strange to mention other blogs without relating to your own project.
